DNC Challenges Upcoming FEC Decision on McCain Matching Funds Use

A BUZZFLASH NEWS ALERT
by Amy Weiss

In a conference call Wednesday, Democratic National Committee (DNC) General Counsel Joe Sandler said the DNC is urging the Federal Election Commission (FEC) to fully investigate Sen. John McCain's withdrawal from public financing during the primary. Sandler claims McCain never made the request to withdraw, and shouldn't have been allowed to if he did.

Word Cloud Analysis Gives Glimpse of What Really Matters on Obama & McCain Blogs

A BUZZFLASH NEWS ALERT
by Meg White

Political analysis comes in many forms, but "a pile of words"? A relatively new Internet phenomenon referred to as "word clouds" gives blog viewers a visual representation of what words appear most frequently on a given page or site.

John Schwenkler, a graduate student in philosophy at the University of California at Berkeley, used this tool to show what is most prominent on Sen. Barack Obama's and Sen. John McCain's campaign blogs (originally published in The Boston Globe).

We thought the resulting images were such beautifully telling snapshots of what each campaign wants the public to see when they look at johnmccain.com or barackobama.com that we just had to share them with our readers.

The more prominent the words are in the word clouds, the more frequently they appear in the source text.

For a bigger image, along with Schwenkler's own insightful analysis of what it all means, we urge you to click on the images below:

In attacking Obama on taxes, McCain attacks himself on taxes?

A BUZZFLASH NEWS ALERT
by Amy Weiss

In McCain's latest attack ad "Taxman," he slanders Obama's position on taxes, pulling from editorials for conservative papers and distorting facts and quotes -- standard fare for the campaign. But what is particularly interesting is the way the McCain campaign does all the work for the Obama campaign, disproving and undermining its own assertions without being prompted.

In the press release about the ad, the McCain campaign quotes various sources talking about Obama and taxes including FactCheck.org:

FactCheck.org: "Obama's Votes Indicate A Willingness To Raise Taxes." "Certainly Obama's votes indicate a willingness to raise taxes, and Obama has not been shy about saying explicitly that he will raise some taxes." ("The $32,000 Question," FactCheck.org, http://www.factcheck.org, 7/8/08)
Yes, Obama has indicated a willingness to eliminate the Bush tax cuts, effectively "raising" taxes on the richest Americans. But what is ridiculous is McCain actually links to the FactCheck.org story that says (BuzzFlash emphasis in bold):
Sen. John McCain's "economic adviser" Steve Forbes pushed the $32,000 claim July 7 in a conference call with reporters and in news interviews. Here's what he said in the call:

Forbes: Senator Obama has a series of tax proposals and tax actions that would devastate the American economy. For example, he has voted to increase income taxes on individuals earning as little as $32,000 a year. He doesn't make much of that on the campaign trail, but he did that in the Senate.

We can certainly see why Obama wouldn't "make much of this" -- especially since it's not true...

Sarah Blustain Uncovers the "True McCain" Position on Abortion: A BuzzFlash Exclusive Interview

A BUZZFLASH NEWS ALERT

A decade ago, it would have been unthinkable to have a presidential candidate with a stance on abortion that was largely unknown to the American people.  But as Sarah Blustain, senior editor at The New Republic, found out, while writing a piece about John McCain's real position on reproductive rights, that seems to be just the case with the senior Senator from Arizona.

McCain attending fundraiser with Abramoff buddy

A BUZZFLASH NEWS ALERT
by Amy Weiss

"Ask Jack Abramoff if I'm an insider in Washington... You'd probably have to go during visiting hours in the prison, and he'll tell you and his lobbyist cronies of the change I made there."

-- Sen. John McCain (R-AZ)

It appears part of McCain's commitment to making "change" for lobbyists includes hiring them for high-level campaign positions and now shamelessly accepting their fundraising help.

McCain will attend a fundraiser with Abramoff crony Ralph Reed in Atlanta on August 18, despite pressure from watchdog groups.

GAO finding: Majority of corporations pay no taxes. Sen. Levin decries 'tax trickery.'

A BUZZFLASH NEWS ALERT
by Amy Weiss

According to the Government Accountability Office (GAO), about two-thirds of foreign-controlled domestic corporations and U.S.-controlled corporations reported no federal tax liability from 1998 through 2005. About a quarter to half of corporations with over $250 million in assets or $50 million in gross receipts reported no liability.

The report was conducted by the GAO at the request of Sens. Carl Levin (D-MI) and Byron Dorgan (D-ND). The purpose of the report was to determine the differences in reporting tax liability between foreign-controlled and U.S.-controlled corporations and not to determine why so many corporations reported no tax liability, though it suggested "transfer price abuse" may play a role as well as tax credits and operating losses.
